This is my second pair of open backs and I much prefer them over closed back for mainly comfort / cooling but also sound stage. Also being able to hear myself / around me. WebMan, that's tough. The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x (wired) have balanced sound but not much soundstage for less than $100. The big negative of the M40x is comfort. These cans are notorious for their shallow ear pads, which can lead to stabbing pain in your ears if you have a moderate-to-big head or ears.
WebSennheiser HD600/650/6XX - Out of these ones, the 600 is IMO the most well-tuned, which is quite important because of the fact you're using them for vinyl and won't be able to EQ them (at least not easily). The main difference between the 600 and the 650/6XX is the lack of mid-bass emphasis in the 600, which is a good thing.
